Look through this glossary of terms to get the definition of the most widespread terms related to male and female infertility.

Semen Viscosity is the liquid flow or consistency of the semen.
Seminal Vesicles are the glands of the male reproductive system, which produce much of the semen volume, including fructose for nourishing the sperm and a chemical, which causes the semen to coagulate on entering into the vagina.

Seminiferous Tubes
are the testicular tubules, where the sperm gets mature and begins to move toward the epididymis.

Septate Uterus
is the term, used to describe an uterus, which is divided into right and left halves by a wall of tissue (which is called “septum”).  Women, who have a septate uterus are at the greater risk of early miscarriage.

Sertoli Cell
is the testicular cell, which is responsible for the spermatids (immature sperm) nourishing. This cell produces an inhibin, feedback hormone, which regulates the secretion of the FSH by the pituitary gland. When the Sertoli Cell is stimulated by FSH, it initiates spermatogenesis.

Short Luted Phase
is the term, used to describe a condition, when the corpus luteum becomes prematurely deteriorated. This causes the menstrual period to begin in about ten days after the ovulation, instead of fourteen. This condition is considered to be frequently found for those women, who are currently undergoing ovulation induction treatment.

Sonogram
is the high – frequency sound waves application in order to create an image of different internal parts of body. Considering infertility it is used to detect and count follicle growth (and disappearance) in many kinds of fertility treatments.

SPA (Sperm Antibody Assay)
is the kind of test, which is done by the incubating sperm with non - viable hamster eggs in order to determine the capacity of it to fertilize.

Sperm
are the reproductive cells of males. Sperm are contained in the seminal fluid.

Sperm Agglutination
is the term, used to describe the sperm clumping, which is caused either by some antibody reaction or by infection.

Sperm Antibodies are those antibodies, which attack and maim sperm. They may either be formed by the man against his own sperm, or by the woman against her husband’s / partner’s sperm.

Sperm Bank
is the place, in which sperm is preserved frozen in liquid nitrogen in order to be used somehow later in the artificial insemination.

Sperm Count
is the exact number of sperm in ejaculate. It is given as the number of sperm per milliliter.

Sperm Donation
is when some male other than a woman’s male partner provides his sperm. As a rule it is performed in case, when the male partner is not able to produce sufficient amount of sperm, or in case if he carries some genetic disorder, or when a woman does not have any male partner, but she wishes to conceive and deliver a child of her own.

Sperm Maturation
is the term, used to describe a process, while which the sperm grow and gains their ability to swim. It takes about nineteen days for the sperm to become mature.
